Reducing paperwork and improving outcomes: How AI can transform care

Artificial intelligence (AI) has the potential to radically improve care. If deployed correctly, it can make the lives of agency leaders, staff, clients and their families far better.

By using AI in a really smart way – focusing on the most time-consuming and least enjoyable tasks – we can free up staff time so it can be used to provide exceptional care, rather than doing endless paperwork.

In the daily life of the carer there is a lot of admin. Everything needs to be logged, recorded and, ultimately, analysed. But we are imagining a world where this data can be collected far more easily, speedily and effectively.

Rather than creating handwritten reports and notes and then transferring them to computer systems, carers could instead use ‘voice-to-text’ recording. These recordings could be automatically converted into the correct format. They could be then added and augmented to existing records and a detailed account of a patient’s life could be created in close to real time.

This would not only be better in terms of time, but also in quality. AI would scan for errors and inaccuracies and make suggestions or highlight areas of concerns. A good, AI-powered care system would keep the human in the loop, but make it easier for them to make the right decisions.

AI also offers great potential for analysis and insights. We know so much about care and how it could be delivered in a proactive and ethical way. We also know what the warning signs are when a patient is likely to need an intervention. But deploying the knowledge of experts in a way that it can be used by people on the ground remains a challenge.

AI systems offer us approaches to care that we could previously only imagine. It can rapidly analyse an individual’s risk metrics against vast existing datasets and knowledge frameworks. Essentially AI systems will enable people working in care to perform work that was previously unimaginable.
